How did the shamans of old times in southern Siberia think? How did they look at the world? How did they work in partnership with the spirits?
In Tuva, Southern Siberia, the bear is a sacred being. Khayirakan, the bear deity, once came down from the ninth heaven to create mankind. There are few places on Earth that are so closely linked to their ancient past as Tuva. In this region shamans have been working with the same methods in an almost unbroken tradition. They call and communicate with the spirits through algyshes, i.e. songs or invocations performed during rituals.
In this book you will find a collection of these songs with roots in times untouched by modern civilization. Reading it will help you understand how shamans of Siberia were, and still are, thinking and working.
During the Soviet era, when shamanism was prohibited and penalties for disobedience were severe, this unique collection was compiled by M.B. Kenin-Lopsan in order to save the heritage of Tuva. M.B. Kenin-Lopsan is a Tuvan shaman himself, as well as an ethnographer and a professor of History.
The project of getting this collection of shamanic songs, algyshes, translated to english and published in the west started twelve years ago in Tuva.
Kjellin from Borlänge got involved three years ago when travelling in Tuva. To get to this isolated republic of the Russian Federation was difficult since travel agencies either claimed that the place did not exist or that if it existed it was impossible to get there. Through a wonderful Russian woman at an agency who made it a personal challenge to get us there we made it to Tuva in 2007. Then we met Professor M.B Kenin-Lopsan and Aldynai Seden Khuurak, our wonderful guide, translator and friend. Together we finalised this project that now is made real with this book "Calling the Bear Spirit".
